Hi my name is Rod and I would like to share part of my family tree with others .
William Henry Holness
William Henry Holness is my greatgrandfather he was born on 8 April 1817 Wingham Kent in England and died Risdon Tasmania 3 March 1892.
He was a convictTried in Kent England at St Augustines court of sessions on 5/1/1841.Sentenced to 7 Yrs Transportation to Van Diemans Land. Embarked on the convict hulk ship the "John Brewer" 17/11/1841 from the port of Sheerness England.Arrived in Hobart
aboard "John Brewer" on 6/4/1842.
Previous Convictions in England:
(1).Robbing a women of 1-12-6 (sentenced to 12 months gaol)
(2).Fined 14/6 for assult.
(3).Stealing Turnips. Gaoled for 14 days.
(4).Stealing potatoes. Gaoled for 3 months
England gaol report. Very bad.
The event listed for transportation was for "stealing iron". Sentenced in Kent England.
Report on WILLIAM HOLNESS behaviour on the convict hulk "John Brewer" at sea was listed as "orderly"
On arrival in Hobart in 1842 was put on a convict road gang at Victoria Valley.
Offences in Colony- Tasmania.
13 May 1844. Being absent from monthly muster.(Working at the time for a Mr.M. Wilson of Davey St Hobart.
29 April 1845. (1) Not proceeding to Browns Road according to his pass.
(2). Being in a disordley house at night.
(3). Worked for a Mr. Hall at Hamilton(not clear what offence) Sentenced to 3 months hard labour.
Also worked for a Mr. Steele at Carlton and employed at Richmond and Browns River while listed as a convict.
Certified free on 6th November 1849.
17 July 1868 was granted 3 lots of land at Risdon for 31 pound
1871 1877 John Holness was named as the owner occupier of this land

William married Hagar COPPING 3 Oct 1853 at St Matthews New Norfolk.They seem to disappear after the marriage but there is a family story and photo of William having 2 sons who no one can find any info on. Hagar was also a convict

On 22 Jan 1874 a Maria HOLNESS wife of William is buried St Margarets Church Cemetery Risdon . No one has traced Hagar death and William's marriage to Maria and it is widely thought that they are the same person.

Amelia Barbara SUPPLICE
Nearly 2 years after Maria’s death William married Amelia Barbara SUPPLICE(many different spellings) daughter of Frederick Robert SUPPLICE (mariner from Memel in Prussia) and Mary Breeze CROWDEY . This marriage took place Manse of Chalmers Free Church Hobart Town on the 18 Nov 1875. The were to have 8 children

Dinah married William STEWART(1864-1921) son of William STEWART(1824-1905) and Sophia HONEYMAN(1835-1914)
This marriage took place 20 Nov 1895 at St Magarets Risdon Chapel William and Dinah were to produce 8 children before William died in 1921 after which Dinah married / had a relationship with Tasman Henry Thomas HILL. Dinah died 8 Jun 1959 and is buried St Margaret’s Church Cemetery
The Stewart family ran the Risdon punt for many years.

Hagar married Frederick Henry RUSSELL 30 Jul 1903 Risdon Chapel Risdon(St Margaret’s) Fred and Hagar gave birth to 3 children also bring up Maxwell Kenneth HILL after his mother Ena’s death. A copy of the whole Holness family at Hagar’s wedding is in the photo gallery

Amelia known as Jane married Hugh TOWART 22 Dec 1914 Mayes of King St Church Hobart. Only one child resulted from this marriage. Jane died 20 Dec 1974 and is buried Cornelian Bay Cemetery

Florence married William STEWART 22 Dec 1904 Mayes of King St Church Hobart and brought up a large family of 13. She died 19 Sep 1944 and is buried at Cornelian Bay Cemetery.

Emma married Edward Delaney 7 Jan 1904 Mayes of King St Church Hobart. 3 girls and a boy were born to this couple. Emma died Oct 1973 and is buried Cornelian Bay Cemetery

Harriett married Reginald Arthur RUSSELL 14 Sep 1910 1903 Risdon Chapel Risdon (St Margaret’s) Harriett had 3 children. Aged 106 she died 25 Sep 1993 and is buried Cornelian Bay Cemetery

William married Vera Amelia McGuire 1908 and raised 8 children.
On the 3 Mar 1892 William HOLNESS senior died and was buried at St Margaret’s Church Yard. His head stone still exist today
